Web applications that involve contextual logic typically must perform various types of in-session logic that determine various user and session attributes, and use this information to execute personalized actions targeted to individual visitors. In addition, the application must record various data about the user and the interaction in cookies and custom log files for subsequent analysis.

When the use of a Content Delivery Network (CDN) is required in conjunction with these types of applications, the CDN must be able to perform “Edge Computing” to execute the customer’s business logic on their network in real time. Edge Computing capabilities within a CDN enable the elements of business logic that interact with visitors to run on the CDN’s network, ideally without the need to communicate with the organization’s servers in real time, delivering increased performance and scalability.
